Most of us tend to think of laptops in the same way: a fairly small portable computer that can open and close like a suitcase, with all of the capabilities of a desktop. In fact, the term "laptop" is really very generic. There are currently four main styles of these portable PCs, each offering something a bit different, depending upon your specific needs.Ultralights ? Also known as sub-notebooks or ultraportables, this style of laptop weighs up to ? but no more than ? four pounds, making them ideal for travelers. The upside of an ultralight is that it doesn't burden those who have to spend a lot of time carrying them with aching muscles, as its larger cousins often do. The downside, however, is that ? in order to cut down on the size and weight ? this type of laptop is so small that there's no room for a network card or internal CD drive.
In order to reap the benefits of these types of "attachments," you'd have to bring an external CD drive and port replicator. Another negative in the scenario is that ultralights tend to be on the expensive end of the laptop spectrum.Notebooks ? This is basically just a regular laptop, but is slightly less heavy, weighing in at four to six pounds. While it's heavier than the smaller ultralight, it also offers more options with less fuss. Offering the flexibility of a combo bay, notebooks are designed with a large opening on the side which allows the user to plug a CD drive, floppy disk or extra battery ? allowing you to access the features that you need without the burden of making room for those that aren't needed.Standards ? Commonly referred to as "regular laptops," these weigh between six and eight pounds and offer a full range of benefits. This technological pack-mule is the best buy ? dollar for dollar ? when you consider the cost/performance ratio.
Due to their popularity, combined with their design and usability, it's not uncommon to find discounts on these from major manufacturers. Other types of laptops, which fall into more specialized categories, tend to be in the higher price ranges. The bottom line is, of the four main types of laptops, the standard is the most economical for the most reasonable amount of money.Extra Large ? Although this type of laptop doesn't yet have a technical name, it's best to simply refer to it as "extra large," since they weigh between eight and ten pounds and have a screen that measures at least 17 inches. In addition, the keyboard is much larger than a standard laptop, making it a more comfortable fit for those who find the keyboard of the standard laptop rather inhibitive. There are a couple of downfalls to owning this type of unit, not the least of which includes its weight.
There can be a four pound difference between the weight of a standard and an extra large laptop ? and that's quite a bit, when you think about lugging it around all day. The other negative factor is the cost of this type of laptop. It offers a price tag that's every bit as hefty as its weight and size. The purchase of a laptop comes down to personal preference, and there are enough styles in the laptop community to please just about everyone. For those who can't decide and just want "a laptop," then it's probably better to stick to the standard model..

Laptops, also known as notebook computers, are trendy and functional computer devices that are now giving business people the best of both worlds in terms of business efficiency and mobility largely due to the fact that you can use batteries to power up the laptop for use anywhere, anytime. But what are laptops and what components go into making up a laptop device? For those who know little about laptops here is a quick overview of the various components that make up these versatile and mobile machines.Screens are the displays that you use to see what the computer is doing whether it be typing words and numbers, surfing the Internet or manipulating images and photos. Laptops of years ago had very dim screens but these days the displays are big and bright and easy to read. The two main options in terms of displays are "dual-scan" and "active-matrix." Dual-scan is the less expensive option, and while it used to be somewhat inferior is a very acceptable option for people on a budget. Active-matrix...

Used toshiba laptops
If you want to get in on the portable revolution, then one of the best options available is to look around on the internet for used toshiba laptops. Toshiba had, has and will likely continue to have a great reputation in the field of portable computer equipment, which makes their laptops popular in the second hand market.Personally, I think of used toshiba laptops as retaining the same quality as the day they were bought ? the cases tend to be rugged, with solid keyboards, which made them expensive to buy, but also means that on the second hand market they hold their value. In short, buying used Toshiba is usually better than buying used other brands. For those who find regular laptops too bulky, but PDA and handled computers too inflexible and underpowered, look out for used toshiba laptops such as the Libretto. This machine is the size of a heavy paperback, much smaller than a laptop, but with enough power to run a copy of Windows NT, 95, 98 or recent Linux builds with good results...

Used cheap laptops - Buyer Beware
If you were going to buy a used car, you would take a look at the engine, check to see how many miles it had been driven, look for any dents and probably you would ask the owner why they were selling it, what problems it has had in the past, and how it has been renovated over the years. Just like you would do a background check on a used car, if you are thinking of buying a used laptop, you need to know what it has been through.
You can save a lot of money by purchasing a used laptop, but a computer's history is a lot more elusive than a car's. A refurbished laptop computer is one that was sold to a customer but sent back to the manufacturer because of problems, and finally fixed in a factory to be sent back to a store to be resold. Used cheap laptops are different than this and they are rarely accompanied with a warranty.
Used cheap laptops are a risky investment - maybe someone simply ditched their laptop because they no longer had any need for it or...
Why Laptops are Different than Desktops
Laptops are different from desktops in the these ways;1.
Power supply: As desktops can be plugged in an outlet in the wall (AC Power) so can laptops with an AC adapter. But how a laptop is different from a desktop is that it is portable because batteries can also power laptops. The batteries are rechargeable; lithium, nickel-cadmium, or nickel-metal hydride.2.
Display: Also like desktops, laptops have some type of LCD display screen.
Modern Laptops have 800 x 600 pixel resolution. This gives it a very clear screen and anything less should be avoided.3.
Input Devices: On a desktop computer you usually use a mouse and keyboard to enter data and navigate. With laptops keyboards are built in but since they are portable so they don't have a mouse. Instead they have one of three input devices in place of the mouse.
A trackball, rotating the ball allows you to move the cursor. A trackpoint allows you to push your finger over the point to move the cursor....

Traveler?s Laptops Targeted by Thieves
"Business traveler's laptops are often targeted by thieves," says Ted Demopoulos, president of Demopoulos Associates. When a laptop is stolen it is at a major inconvenience and if company confidential data gets into the wrong hands the results can be truly catastrophic. Most professionals travel at least occasionally and should take these simple steps to protect their laptop from physical theft.? Use a locking cable and perhaps an alarm for your laptop, available at any computer store.? Carry your laptop in something other than a laptop bag, for example a briefcase or backpack.? Try not to leave laptops in a car. This isn't always practical, but minimize it as much as practical. Never leave a laptop, laptop case, or briefcase in plain sight in a car.? Watch your laptop carefully in airports and train stations! Certainly do not put it in checked luggage. Do not ignore or leave it alone for even a few seconds.? Many laptops are stolen from businesses.
